How we help
Sole Trader Accounting Services
Our support can be arranged around your business activity, existing records and reporting requirements. You may only need help at tax-return time, or you may want ongoing bookkeeping and tax support throughout the year.
Sole Trader Bookkeeping and Digital Records
Keep invoices, sales, expenses, bank transactions and receipts organised. Accurate records make it easier to understand profit, monitor cash flow and prepare a reliable tax return. Explore our bookkeeping services for ongoing support.
Self Assessment Tax Returns
We help you organise self-employment income, review relevant expenses, calculate your trading profit and prepare the information needed for your Self Assessment return. Where relevant, we also discuss payments on account and the timing of tax payments. For a more detailed guide to filing, visit our Self Assessment tax return service.
Allowable Expenses and Tax Planning
Depending on what your business does, allowable expenses may include relevant business software, professional insurance, marketing, equipment, business travel and a qualifying proportion of home-working costs. Not every purchase qualifies, and private use must be separated. We review your circumstances and explain the treatment that may apply. Read our tax planning and advice service.
VAT Registration and Returns
Some sole traders need to register for VAT, while others may choose voluntary registration where appropriate. We can discuss whether VAT applies to your business and the records you need to keep. See our VAT accounting services.
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax
Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax changes how qualifying sole traders and landlords keep records and report information to HMRC. It requires compatible software and quarterly updates for those within scope. We can help you understand the requirements, organise records and plan the transition. Read our Making Tax Digital guide for small businesses for the current thresholds and reporting deadlines.
Starting Out as Self-Employed
New to self-employment? We can explain registration considerations, the information you should retain from day one, and how to separate business and personal activity. If you are considering forming a company instead, see our company formation service.
Sole Trader Tax Requirements: Key Points
- Registration: Many people must register for Self Assessment as a sole trader if their gross trading income is more than £1,000 in a tax year. Other registration circumstances can also apply.
- Records: Keep evidence of sales, business income, expenses and other information needed to calculate your profit and complete returns.
- Self Assessment: The usual online filing and balancing payment deadline is 31 January after the relevant tax year, subject to the rules applying to your circumstances.
- MTD for Income Tax: The phased thresholds are qualifying income above £50,000 from 6 April 2026, above £30,000 from 6 April 2027 and above £20,000 from 6 April 2028. Qualifying income generally includes gross income from self-employment and property, before expenses; exemptions and detailed eligibility conditions can apply.

Your questions answered
Frequently Asked Questions About Sole Trader Accounting
Do I legally need an accountant as a sole trader?
No. Hiring an accountant is not generally a legal requirement simply because you trade as a sole trader. You remain responsible for meeting the tax and record-keeping rules that apply to you. Professional support can help you manage those responsibilities and avoid preventable errors.
What is the difference between a sole trader and a limited company?
A sole trader operates a business personally, while a limited company is a separate legal entity with its own filing and tax responsibilities. Liability, tax treatment, administration and the right structure for you depend on your circumstances. If you already run a company, visit our limited company accountants page.
What expenses can I claim as a sole trader?
Qualifying business-related expenses may be deductible when calculating taxable profit. The correct treatment depends on the expense, business use and accounting method. For example, personal spending is not an allowable business expense. HMRC provides further detail in its self-employed expenses guidance.
When must I register as self-employed?
HMRC generally requires new registrants who need to submit a return to notify it by 5 October following the end of the tax year concerned. Other circumstances and exceptions can apply; check your position rather than assuming a deadline.
Will Making Tax Digital apply to every sole trader?
No. It is being introduced in stages based on qualifying income, and exemptions may apply. We can help you work out whether and when your business is likely to come within scope.
Can Samsaad help if my bookkeeping is behind?
Yes. We can discuss the records you have, identify missing information and scope a bookkeeping catch-up before preparing a return or moving to ongoing support.
How much does a sole trader accountant cost?
The fee depends on the work involved, your record quality, transaction volume and whether you need year-round support or help with a particular return. Contact us with a few details so we can discuss a suitable scope and fee.
